There is a dog who made the world news last year. This dog has sat in the same place in front of the gate to his dead master's house for the last five years. This will be year number six going on seven if the dog is still there. The house is abandoned. The dog is perhaps still waiting. The dog is from the town of Malu Mare, Romania. No one knows his name. His owner was a private man who kept to himself. No one knew much about him. The towns folk have been kind to the dog. They have tried taking him home with them but he runs back. They feed him regularly. In the year-old-news photos the dog sits before the gate. He looks healthy but sad.
The news articles worshiped the dog's loyalty and love for his deceased master. End of their story. There is no resolve. No reporting beyond last year. No update anywhere on whether he's still sitting there waiting. The dog might still be there unable to move on but the news which reported on him with such enthusiasm has roared on by. He's soaked by rain, blown by wind, tempted by smells and other dogs yet he can't find what would free him to leave. There is a mental chain on this dog. Some would say it's simply his devotion and loyalty. I think it is perhaps more. The dog is mentally lost. He has been derailed. He knows only the one way to be. He knows the habits that he has kept with his master. He knows what he has been taught to do and nothing more. Perhaps for years it was only the two of them, his trust limited to this one man. Perhaps the dog was never socialized to other creatures. All he knew was his own small life. This is what he clings to while he relentlessly awaits his master's return. The dog could be freed from this. It would take somebody patient to sit with the dog every day. Be there with him for longer and longer amounts of time. Build trust. Talk to him and pat him. Take him for short walks but always return him respectfully to his spot. Over time a new life would gradually come to him. New habits would grow to dominate until he was completely consumed by a new will and freed from his prison of the unknown. A way forward for him would emerge. Trust and love will not grow without time but with time they almost never fail to blossom. I am hoping that someone from Malu Mare has realized this and put the time into the dog. Given him a patient and loving chance to move on. I have written several emails to the Mayor's office in Malu Mare and to a local vet's office inquiring after the dog. I am hoping to hear that he has moved on and is with a new owner. I feel for this dog and would like the resolve of knowing that with someones love he's finally been able to move on. I am waiting for my answer. I am hoping for resolve, resolve for the dog, resolve for me and resolve I can pass on to you.
