Smoky: 1943-1957 Smoky, a 4 pound, 7 inch Yorkshire terrier, was found in an abandon foxhole in the jungle of New Guinea during WWII. She was sold by one corporal to another for about $6.50. She spent the next two years with Corporal William Waynne, the corporal who had bought her. She served in the South Pacific with Wynne and the 5th Air Force, 26th Photo Recon Squadron. She flew 12 air/sea rescue and photo recon missions with Wynne. She entertained troops with her tricks and kept morale up. She also helped to warn Wynne of incoming artillery. This once saved his life. She also pulled a wire through a long, narrow culvert, helping the soldiers establish an important line of communication. She became famous after the war and had her own TV show with Wynne.
