My friend Bernie was recently visiting his friends who live on a remote sheep station in the Falkland Islands. One night when we were Skyping he told me about a little Magellanic penguin who lived under the sheep shearing shed. This was the only penguin who spent time there. Later his friends sent me a photo of the shed penguin. I love it when an animal stands out as a real individual.
I'd love to know why this one penguin is so different from the rest. I like to think he likes the space he can have all to himself in a crowded penguin world. Of course I do not really know why he spends time under the shed. I don't even actually know if it's a male penguin. And, as has been pointed out to me, it is perhaps not always the same penguin that is being seen alone under the shed. If the Falkland Islands was not 6000 miles away, you can bet I'd go and find out the story for myself. I am always in pursuit of individual animals, to paint them, to understand them, and to tell their stories. Send me what you know.
